How to start a Trash Hero chapter

''Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.''
- Margaret Mead

What is Trash Hero?

Trash Hero is a global movement, run by volunteers.

Its aim is to bring communities together to clean and reduce waste in the environment; create a sustainable future through projects that help reduce plastic pollution; and encourage long-term behavioural change.

Founded in Thailand in December 2013, it is now active in 100 locations worldwide. The network is coordinated by Trash Hero World, a Swiss-registered non-profit association.

What is a chapter?

Chapters are local volunteer groups. Run by residents, with support from our mentor team, they organise weekly cleanups and / or manage a water bottle refill scheme. They may also run a kids’ programme, do presentations at business associations, and other activities to build consensus for zero waste cities and communities.

Why start a chapter?

There are many reasons for starting a regular cleanup / litter pick near you. The main goal should be that you want to create a positive change within your community and for the planet.

You should also be clear that Trash Hero is not an activity to promote yourself or any personal business interests. The strength of Trash Hero as a whole comes from each chapter creating and sustaining an independent, active and growing presence in its community.

Will I make a good Trash Hero leader?

Trash Hero takes action in an inclusive and respectful way. So a positive attitude and an ability to communicate with a range of people are important. Speaking both the local language and English (or having someone on your team who does) is helpful.

These qualities are more important than previous experience.

How much time will I have to give?

The better your team, the easier it gets. Once you are set up, the usual amount would be around 4 hours per week; 2 hours for the cleanup, and another 2 for communication, finding local sponsors and social media.

Trash Hero is more than a one time event, so you’ll need to have this time regularly. Your goal is to create a community that will work together and make a real difference in your area.

Will I be paid?

Yes, with lots of good karma and smiles and positive energy – but not with money.

And you should not have to spend any of your own money, because by involving local businesses, all running costs can be covered.

Will I get training?

We have a comprehensive Trash Hero chapter handbook for organising beach cleanups, setting up a bottle refill programme and other activities. You will also have access to our mentor team who will coach you and provide support.

Communication with other chapters is encouraged and regular workshops are held to exchange knowledge and resources.

What are the first steps?

Check where the nearest Trash Hero chapter to your area is. See the full list here. If there is one near you, get in touch and ask them to share their experience with you.

You will need to create a team: alone you can walk faster but together you get further. You can ask people you know, or post on social media to see if anyone is interested in helping. Have an initial meeting and go through the Trash Hero Chapter Handbook.

Include at least one person well-connected to the local community. If you are under 18, you will need an adult in your team.

Ideally you will have 3 – 4 team members who can cover a range of tasks:

  • organising activities;
  • communicating with the public;
  • involving the community and local businesses;
  • documenting and sharing what you do;
  • and translating.

There is no registration fee or membership fee.

If you have any questions, you can WhatsApp us on +447425114326. Or, if you are ready to take action, please contact us to set up your new chapter.

Not for you?

We have plenty of other volunteer opportunities that will get you involved with our movement. Please check our volunteer jobs board for more details. Or, you can make a donation that will go towards our programmes.

If you are passing through any area with an existing Trash Hero chapter, you can also go along and help them out with a cleanup – no cost, no sign up, just show up.
