The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

In March 2022, Trash Hero World was granted formal consultative status at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) of UNEP. This means we are among the 500+ NGOs globally who are accredited to give input and participate in the sessions of the UNEA as well as its subsidiary organs such as the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum.

Collaborations

Stopping plastic pollution is a complex problem. Only by connecting with others and working together can we make meaningful progress and lasting change.
Here are a few of the organisations, coalitions and networks we work with. If you have an idea for collaboration, please contact us!

Trash Hero World is proud to be a core member of 1000+ groups worldwide pledging to stop plastic pollution.

Break Free From Plastic is a vision that highlights 10 principles with the ultimate goal being ‘a future free from plastic pollution’. It represents the first step in a global movement to change society’s perception and use of plastics.

The multinational group aims to encourage lifestyles and economies that fit within the planet’s environmental limits, promote waste reduction, and facilitate community action – among other initiatives.

GAIA is a global network working towards a just and waste-free world without incineration. For almost 20 years, they have grown the zero waste movement around the world, helped pass policies that reduce waste, especially single-use plastic and prevented the spread of ineffective and hazardous incinerators and other burn practices.

After a successful collaboration providing “Zero Waste Communities” training for our volunteers in Southeast Asia, Trash Hero Thailand and Trash Hero Indonesia joined the network in 2021. This gives us access to a wealth of knowledge and experience in community-based activism, as well as allowing us to engage with many other groups in the Asia-Pacific region.

Founded in 1998, the International Pollutants Elimination Network comprises more than 600 NGOs in 120+ countries, forging a healthier world where people and the environment are no longer harmed by the production, use, and disposal of toxic chemicals. We joined IPEN to bring their important research on toxins in plastics to our network and support their work to strengthen global and national chemicals and waste policies.

OceanCare has been committed to marine wildlife protection since 1989. Through research and conservation projects, campaigns, environmental education, and involvement in a range of important international committees, OceanCare undertakes concrete steps to improve the situation for wildlife in the world’s oceans. In 2011, OceanCare was granted Special Consultative Status on marine issues with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is part of the UNEP Global Partnership on Marine Litter.

Through environmental education, OceanCare encourages a rethinking of our attitude towards plastic and urges people not to use disposable plastic. The organisation cooperates with Trash Hero and supports their various beach cleaning activities.

Let’s Do It Foundation was established in 2011 to support the growth of a civic movement of nationwide cleanup actions. Over the years they have mobilised 36 million positive-minded, action-orientated people in 169 countries to tackle environmental and social problems related to mismanaged solid waste.

After calling to life World Cleanup Day – the biggest ever civic action against waste – they are continuing their work towards a waste free world following the Keep It Clean Plan.

Trash Hero World collaborated with Let’s Do It educators to devise and deliver a series of volunteer training on “Zero Waste Communities” in 2020-21, which led to further training of our staff in teaching zero waste.

The Plastic Soup Foundation (PSF) was founded in February 2011. Their goal is to make everyone familiar with the phenomenon of plastic soup and to stop it at its source. As long as the supply of plastic to our rivers, seas and oceans is not stopped, it’s like trying to empty the ocean with a thimble.

PSF are a single-issue organisation and focus entirely on plastics. With a small, committed and passionate team of about twenty-five people, they give everything to achieve their goal: no plastic in our water or our bodies!

The potential negative health effects of plastics are a major cause for concern. Not just for PSF, but for an increasing number of scientists and organisations as well. This is why they have initiated the Plastic Health Coalition.

Trash Hero is proud to have been invited to be a member of the Plastic Health Coalition. Together we’re working on more research, prevention, and solutions. Trash Hero will help to spread the knowledge throughout our global network in multiple languages.

Tlejourn is an independent social enterprise in Pattani, Thailand that started up through a “donation” of 80,000 broken flip-flops collected on beach cleanups by Trash Hero Thailand volunteers. They developed a simple, low resource process to shred and reform the shoes into flexible material that can be shaped into soles, and even soft surface play mats.

The shoes are produced by hand from these mats by local villagers, creating a much-needed income in this troubled border area. The company also provides education and workshops around the country for people interested in upcycled products.

The shoes can be purchased online or via Facebook. We continue to supply them with raw materials, and they most recently created a limited edition “Phi Phi” model, made with 100kg of trash collected from Thailand’s iconic Maya Bay.
