Six Senses Yao Noi Donates Trash Hero Bottles to All Kids on the Island

by Leslie Finlay on 31/08/2019 No comments

If Trash Heroes are certain of one thing, it’s that change happens when we band together!

The Trash Hero Kids Movement is going strong in Koh Yao Noi, Thailand, where kids at local schools are taking action to save the world and learn how to live more sustainably.

The excitement grew even stronger this month thanks to Six Senses Resort, which bought new reusable Trash Hero Water Bottles for all the kids on the island! The resort also installed water filtration systems in every school on Koh Yao Noi.

Making the switch from single-use plastics to reusable alternatives is critically important to the global fight against pollution. By teaching kids this importance, Trash Hero is actively working toward a sustainable future – and building the leaders of tomorrow!

Of the 20,000 plastic drink bottles purchased globally every second, it’s estimated that 19,000 are destined for a landfill at best – or otherwise likely to wind up in the sea. By using a reusable bottle, we can each save hundreds of plastic bottles every year from this fate!

Trash Hero Expands to 52 Chapters Globally

by Leslie Finlay on 22/02/2018 No comments

It’s true that not all heroes wear capes. In fact, many of them wear yellow – more than 63,000 of them to be exact!

Until the end of 2017, 52 Trash Hero chapters around the world rallied 63,098 volunteers who removed more than 408,137 kilograms of waste from our beaches, waterways, and communities. Reports estimate that most of this debris would inevitably find its way to the ocean, where it accumulates en masse and is much more difficult to remove from the environment. Much of this waste our heroes removed is plastic, which scientists agree never truly degrades but fragments into smaller and smaller bits, sustaining within the world’s ecosystems for thousands of years. Plastic of any size can be ingested by wildlife, killing the animal or cycling chemicals into the food chain.

That’s why our Trash Heroes didn’t stop at participating in 2,459 cleanups, but made active efforts to live a more sustainable, zero-waste lifestyle that eliminates trash from entering the ecosystem in the first place. More than 44,900 reusable water bottles were sold at over 256 participating businesses, saving an estimated 16-million single-use plastic bottles; 5,400 Trash Hero reusable bags were also sold, reducing single-use plastic bag use by at least 540,000 by some estimates.

Our heroes also spoke at three TEDx Talks around the world, relaying their own stories about the impact of waste in their communities and the importance of moving toward a waste-free lifestyle. Trash Hero is committed to active waste management and removal, but our mission encompasses the importance of education – spreading the attitude of sustainability. In fact, about 14,206 of our heroes in 2017 were kids, whose involvement is an enormous bright spot and the key to a cleaner future.

All in all, 2017 was an exciting year for us! Will you be joining the yellow-shirted heroes this year? Get in touch to find out how!

A breakdown of our 2017 numbers:

  • 52 active chapters in 9 countries – Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, USA, Czech Republic, Switzerland, China, Singapore
  • 63,098 heroes attended 2,459 cleanups, removing 208,137 kilograms of trash from the environment
  • 14,206 of those heroes were kids
  • 44,900 reusable bottles were sold at 256 participating businesses – this means that more than 16 million plastic bottles were not produced
  • 5,400 Trash Hero reusable bags were sold, keeping 540,000 single-use plastic bags out of the environment
  • Speakers at 3 TEDx Talks spread the philosophy of sustainability and zero-waste to their communities at large

THANK YOU to all of our incredible heroes, and we hope to see you in 2018!

Ban Krut Launches Bottles

by Amelia Meier on 03/01/2017 1 comment

03 January 2017 – Trash Hero Ban Krut

Trash Hero Ban Krut has just launched the Trash Hero bottle. One more location in Thailand that has now joined! Bottles can now be purchased for 200 Baht, and those with a bottle in hand can then get free refills at the water stations at the Siriphong Guesthouse  and the Gecko Bar Ban Krut (Gecko Bar Bankrut). OR, at any other one of the refill stations across Thailand.

The Trash Hero Bottle program aims to substantially reduce the amount of plastic bottles that end up on the beaches, in the sea, and in our communities by providing reusable replacements which not only benefit the environment, but also save those who own one money. Since March 2016, around 4000 litres of water have been bottled at the water station at Siriphong Guesthouse and the Gecko Bar. This means that more than 2600 plastic bottles (1.5l) have been saved… or 8000 bottles if we are counting in 0.5l bottles.

Sponsor Update 2016 (Part I): Trash Hero Bottles

by Amelia Meier on 26/09/2016 2 comments

September 26, 2016 – Trash Hero World

As we wrap up 2016, we wanted to reflect on the considerable progress made this year. This success was made possible by the many volunteers who help every week and by the generosity of donors.

The world’s mounting waste problem threatens public health, pollutes the environment and impairs development in poorer countries, and yet awareness of the scope of the problem is alarmingly low. Donations received this year have enabled Trash Hero World to launch sustainable, actionable programs to tackle those issues and ultimately change the behaviour toward waste management through awareness and education, notably in both Indonesia and Thailand.

One of these programs is the “Love Thailand Water Bottles” initiative, which Trash Hero World supported with USD 4’300. This program aims to sustainably reduce the amount of plastic bottles that end up on beaches. The bottles are sold for no profit to businesses in Thailand. The businesses sell it with a 3$ profit and in return agree to provide free drinking water refill for all Trash Hero bottles. More than 20’000 bottles have been sold since December 2014 by the communities of Koh Lipe, Koh Lanta and Chiang Mai.

Trash Hero World recently extended the project to nine additional locations in Thailand with a distribution of 1’500 bottles. We look to continue the program’s expansion to Indonesia as well. Bottle production requires two months, which is why an initial investment is necessary in order to make the bottles available to businesses. Once the bottles are sold the next order is placed.

Koh Tao for example bought 60 “Love Thailand” Bottles to convince businesses to participate and have now launched their own “Love Koh Tao” bottle with 15 participating businesses and 1’000 bottles.
