1. Why should I join the Trash Hero water refill network?

Around 80% of people prefer eco-friendly businesses. Joining our network is an easy and low-cost* way to show your commitment to a cleaner world. It can bring new customers to your business and makes a significant contribution to reducing both plastic pollution and climate change. It also builds goodwill in your local community.

*You pay only for the water you offer, there is no cost to join the network itself.

What do I have to do to join?

1. Offer free drinking water refills to anyone with a Trash Hero bottle
2. Put up a Trash Hero refill point sign to show you are part of the network
3. Take a photo of your refill area and go to our website form to sign up

Can I charge for water refills?

You cannot charge anyone with an official Trash Hero bottle for a refill.
However, you can charge a small amount for any person who brings a different bottle to refill. You can specify the price on our sign-up form and at the refill point. We recommend a price similar to or less than what would have been paid for an individual bottle of water.

I worry that people will abuse the free water refills.

We have a fair use policy that protects you. You can print this out and show to any customers you believe are taking advantage of your generosity:
“All refill partners have the right not to serve anyone who they believe are abusing the spirit of the offer. This could be, for example, sitting down in a cafe with only a free water refill and no other purchase, or bringing a very large container to refill. The application of the policy is at the discretion of individual partners.”

Do I have to offer chilled water?

No, this is not necessary, however many customers will appreciate cold water.

Do I have to have a water dispensing machine?

No, this is not necessary, though tourists will sometimes feel more comfortable with this method. Water can also be offered in jugs or on request at the counter. The water itself can come from the tap (in countries where it is safe to drink tap water), a filtered water source or refillable tank. Important is that no single-use plastic is involved.

Do I have to stop selling plastic water bottles?

There is no obligation to stop selling single-use plastic bottles. However, many of our refill partners choose to also take this step, as they understand that switching fully to refill has the maximum positive benefits both for the planet and for their reputation.

Do I have to put up the refill point sign?

Yes, this is a necessary step. We offer the sign in blue, yellow or black and white so it can fit in with any decor.

I don’t have a printer.

Contact your nearest Trash Hero chapter or send us a message. We may be able to provide a printed version of the sign.

How will people find my business?

Once you have set up your refill point and registered, we will add your business to our public refill map. People can find you by searching the local area for refill points. If you have a Trash Hero chapter near you, they will also promote your business as a refill point on their social media channels.

Is there any cost involved to be on the map?

No, there is zero cost to be on the map.
